Week 8, March 24:  Raiatea Helm presents: A Legacy of Hawaiian Song & String, Volume One — Raiatea Helm and an Ensemble of Hawaiʻi’s Top Musicians

Join us for an extraordinary evening that unites the past and present in a heartfelt celebration of Hawaiʻi’s enduring legacy. Raiatea Helm will present an unforgettable evening showcasing her critically acclaimed album, A Legacy of Hawaiian Song & String, a tribute to the troubadours of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Accompanied by an ensemble of Hawaiʻi’s finest musicians – Ian OʻSullivan, Duane Padilla, Scott Robert Villiger, CaseyAlan Olsen, and Kapono Lopes — Raiatea breathes new life into these timeless compositions, honoring the composers and storytellers who shaped Hawaiʻi’s rich musical history.

Raiatea is one of the last keepers of traditional Hawaiian music, setting the standard to ensure the quality and authenticity of this cherished art form are preserved and honored. Through her interpretations, she carries forward the legacy of these mele, bringing to life the voices and stories of a once-flourishing nation.

Born on Oʻahu, raised on Molokaʻi, and deeply connected to Hanapēpē, Kauaʻi, where her mother is a native, two-time Grammy nominee and multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner Raiatea Helm is known for her clear leo kiʻekiʻe (high voice) and her mastery of leo haʻihaʻi —a uniquely Hawaiian vocal style where the intentional breaking of the voice reflects the deep emotions embedded in the poetry of folk songs. These songs speak of love, longing, and connection to people and places.

As Raiatea prepares for the next installment, A Legacy of Hawaiian Song & String: Volume 2, this performance offers a glimpse into her ongoing mission to preserve and celebrate the music of the Hawaiian Kingdom.
