Friday, January 19th, 2024 at 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm
FREECome hear tales of heroic ancestors in Kona Moku, Waimea from the 14th century to Kaumualiʻi’s reign. As a foreshadowing of Kamehameha’s unification of all islands, a Hawaiʻi island monarch, conquers each island, with the last intent being to take Kauaʻi. With wisdom, strategy, a magic sword, and aid from his kahuna, Kūkona overpowers and out-manuevers other island forces. Kauaʻi Pule Oʻo- Kauaʻi of the Strong Prayer. As he grants freedom to each Island Aliʻi, they promise never to raise a hand in war against Kauaʻi; and 400 years of peace prevail until after Kaumualiʻi’s death.
Brook Kapūkuniahi Parker uses his own moʻokūʻauhau and paintings of ancestors to illustrate and enliven his stories. Beside his voluminous collections of original paintings of aliʻi and warriors, (see Hawaiian@Art.org); Brook has illustrated dozens of books for Kamehameha Press. While on Kauaʻi, he will offer a Drawing Heroes Workshop; and also plan an original graphic illustration for a Storyboard of Kaumualiʻi’s Kauhale at Pā’ulaʻula.
