HAWAIIAN SPIRITUALITY AND HERBAL MEDICINE WORKSHOP

July 15th, 2023 at 9:00 am12:00 pm

$50

Experience the heart of Hawaiian culture and its herbal medicine tradition at a special event on Saturday, July 15 at the Lawai International Center.

This extremely popular workshop will be led by Sean Chun, a renowned Hawaiian cultural practitioner, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Chun will discuss Hawaiian healing methodology and philosophy, including the use of la’au and ho’oponopono. La’au is healing with spirituality and herbs that addresses the body, mind, and spirit.  Ho’oponopono is a Hawaiian practice of reconciliation and forgiveness.

“We will talk about an overview of traditional Hawaiian healing, history, and about various arts that are practiced,” said Chun.  “A lot that is out there today isn’t really traditional.  I will try to bring more awareness.”

There will be a $50 donation. To register, visit www.lawaicenter.org or text or call (808) 639-5952 or email info@lawaicenter.org.  The workshop address is 3381 Wawae Road, Kalaheo, HI 96741. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

Chun is the island coordinator of Kaua’i Kupuna Council of Traditional Healers, the cultural resource coordinator for Ho’ola Lahui Hawai’i, and coordinator of Pihana Ka ‘Ikena, perpetuating the Hawaiian culture. He combines mana (knowledge) gained from teachers throughout the years and from different islands, many of whom have passed.

Chun noted that holding the workshop and demonstration at the Lawai Center is fitting.  “It’s a good combination of place, time, and people who really understand what healing is about,” he said.

The Lawai International Center, a non-profit community project, is an archaeological and cultural treasure in a valley that has long been recognized as a healing sanctuary.  In 1904, the first generation of Japanese immigrants built 88 shrines replicating an ancient pilgrimage of 88 temples in Shikoku, Japan.  Today, the Center is the only such site existing outside of Japan. It is one of the oldest Buddhist temple sites in the country.  The Lawai Center was established to preserve and nurture the land and its cultural heritage by creating a place of compassion and Aloha where dedicated volunteers welcome all who come to experience its essence.

This special event is made possible with the generous support of the Hawaii Tourism Authority through its Community Enrichment Program.
