EKK closes the 2024 season of exploring the Significant Songs of Hawai’i with three pivotal Hawaiian music artists who collectively have devoted over 120 years helping to shape the music scene through their ability to inspire, engage and foster a new generation of Hawaiian music practitioners.
Eric Lee, a 30-year musician and multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano awardee with an eclectic repertoire, is an asset to many groups and has performed all over the world. Heʻs been recently making music with Moon and Mel.
Moon Kauakahi, a Nānākuli native, devoted over 40 years as a full-time musician as a key member of the Makaha Sons of Niʻihau. Officially retired, he still composes music and chants and arranges music for other Hawaiian music groups. His most significant value in life is “haʻahaʻa”
Mel Aminaʻs early affinity for the ʻukulele & slack key guitar led him to join his cousins Skippy and Iz Kamakawiwoʻole, Moon Kauakahi and Sam Gray to form the Makaha Sons of Niʻihau, later 3 Scoops of Aloha and the IZ Band. He is revered as a cultural ambassador and music mentor.
