SUMMARY:Israel Vibration featuring Duane Stephenson & Roots Radics
DESCRIPTION:Israel Vibration\nFeaturing Duane Stephenson & Roots Radics \nShow Date\nSunday June 1\, 2025 \nIsrael Vibration\nA living lesson in fortitude\, the vocal trio of Cecil “Skeley” Spence\, Albert “Apple Gabriel” Craig\, and Lascelle “Wiss” Bulgin overcame adversity\, illness\, and poverty to become one of the finest roots groups in Jamaica’s history. All three had been afflicted by polio and first became acquainted\, albeit briefly\, at Kingston’s Mona Rehabilitation Clinic.\nThe three teens had individually all previously converted to rastafarianism\, now their shared faith and childhood experiences helped forge a strong friendship. They spent the next six years singing around Kingston for their suppers and by 1975\, Israel Vibration was a vocal force to be reckoned with. The group’s exquisite dread sound and militant cultural themes made an instant impression and the trio now found themselves on-stage opening for the likes of Bob Marley and Dennis Brown. \nThe trio’s deeply devotional songs\, cultural themes\, inspirational lyrics\, and original take on the roots style had struck a chord with reggae fans around the world. They relocated to New York City\, perhaps believing that the large immigrant community could sustain them\, or that America was now ready to embrace roots. But a few occasional live appearances aside\, the group swiftly disappeared from view. All three attempted solo careers\, but only Bulgin made it on to record; his Mr. Sunshine album paired him with the Freedom Fighters Band. \nIn 1997\, Apple Gabriel left the group to pursue a solo career\, releasing the album Another Moses in 1999. Skelly and Wiss continue to record albums and tour the world as Israel Vibration\, backed by longtime associates Roots Radics. In December 2014 they were reportedly recording a new album set for release in early 2015. The new album\, entitled “Play It Real” was released on 31 March 2015 via Utopia. On March 23rd\, 2020\, Albert “Apple Gabriel” co-founder and former member of the group died due to ‘compilation sickness’\, earlier reports indicated that Albert was not well for quite some time\, this was supposedly due to some of the polio infections left in his body. On a Facebook post on March 7\, 2020\, he had indicated that he had suffered a stroke. He died on March 23\, 2020. On August 26th\, 2022\, Cecil “Skelly” Spence died of lung cancer. \nDUANE STEPHENSON\nDuane Stephenson has distinguished himself as a respected singer and songwriter with a purity of heart and sound that can be felt from the first note of his melodic instrument. From the quality of his voice to his potent lyrics and memorable melodies\, Duane ably addresses a variety of issues\, ranging from powerful social commentary to romance. Duane’s work as a singer and songwriter are reflective of his early artistic exposure to the music industry veterans\, many of whom have provided guidance and inspiration along his path. \n\n\n\nWhat’s included\n\nThis is GA standing room show. SUMMARY:Don Braden Quartet
DESCRIPTION:A world-class saxophonist\, flutist\, composer and educator\, Don Braden’s jazz career has spanned over 40 years. He has toured the world with jazz greats Betty Carter\, Wynton Marsalis\, Tony Williams\, Freddie Hubbard\, Roy Haynes\, Herbie Hancock and the Hancock Institute\, and many others\, and has performed in venues as diverse as Carnegie Hall\, Saturday Night Live\, Harvard University (where he studied Engineering as an undergrad)\, and countless jazz festivals and clubs. He has played on over 100 CDs as a sideman and has produced 23 as a leader\, the most recent being his critically acclaimed Earth Wind and Wonder and the recently released In the Spirit of Herbie Hancock and Chemiatry\, co-led with bassist Joris Teepe. \nBorn in Cincinnati\, Ohio on November 20\, 1963\, and raised in Louisville\, Kentucky\, Braden’s first exposure to music came from his parents’ record collection\, and from radio. Although there were no musicians in his family\, he showed a strong interest in music early on. At age 13\, he started playing tenor sax in middle school band class\, and two years later\, joined his first professional band — influenced by and performing the music of “contemporary Jazz” groups like The Crusaders. After being introduced to acoustic jazz in high school by band director Ernie Sanders\, Braden studied for years with saxophonist Mike Tracy and also attended Jamey Aebersold’s Summer Jazz Workshops. He went on to be chosen first chair for the McDonald’s All-American High School Jazz and Marching Bands\, and to receive a Yamaha Instrument Award (given to an outstanding All-American Band member). \nAfter his acceptance to Harvard University in 1981\, Braden divided his time between studying engineering and performing at jazz clubs around the Boston/Cambridge area and with the Harvard Jazz Bands. In 1984\, he took time off from Harvard to more deeply explore jazz (and some engineering) in the “real world” of New York City. While working part-time as a computer programmer\, he landed his first gigs with the Harper Brothers Quintet\, with organist Dr. Lonnie Smith\, and then with legendary vocalist Betty Carter. After touring with the Wynton Marsalis Quintet for over seven months\, he recorded with Betty Carter on her Grammy Award-winning album\, “Look What I Got” (Verve-Polygram). Following tours in Europe\, Japan and the Americas with Tony Williams\, Roy Haynes\, and many others\, Braden became a member of the Freddie Hubbard Quintet from 1989 to 1991\, then the Tom Harrell groups from 1993 through 1997. Since then he has worked with the Mingus Big Band\, Kenny Barron\, J. J. Johnson\, the Dizzy Gillespie All-Stars\, the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band\, and many others\, as well as with his own groups. \nThe Don Braden Quartet will appear for one-night only on Kauai.  For more information\, visit http://www.donbradenjazz.com.
