Niihau-Lehua Boat Tour by Holo Holo Charters and Kauai Historical Society

On May 19, Kauai Historical Society and Holo Holo Charters are sponsoring a seven-hour boat tour up the Na Pali Coast and over to Niihau and Lehua. Along with spectacular beauty along the coast, this educational tour will focus on the geology, history and cultural aspects of the people and the land. Tour features the following speakers from Kauai:

Chuck Blay, geologist and author of “Kauai’s Geologic History.” Chuck will speak about Niʻhau’s volcanic origins, crater location and its physical influences on the Na Pali boundary formation.

Mama Lou Koerte, who teaches K-2 at Ke Kula Niʻihau O Kekaha Public Charter School. Having close ties to Niihau, she perpetuates the culture and language with her students and will share them with us. She will discuss Niihau shell lei making and many memories of growing up on Niihau island.

Lopaka Bukoski, who attended the University of Hawaii at Hilo and taught at Kamehameha Schools, will speak on Niihau history and culture from a kane (male) perspective.

Mark Rossi will play guitar and sing Hawaiian songs, with a special focus on the unique harmonies and lyrics he learned from Niihau musicians under his kumu Malaki Kanahele.
