ANAINA HOU INTRODUCES GUIDED GATHER

A LOCALLY GROWN CULINARY EXPERIENCE AT KAUAʻIʻS LARGEST FARMERʻS MARKET

Kaua‘i’s unique and beautiful North Shore gathering place, Anaina Hou Community Park (pronounced A NYNA HO), invites visitors to experience Kauaʻi at its roots, in a ʻGuided Gatherʻ through the largest farmers market on the island.

Every Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm, in an experience designed especially for parents and teens, Guided Gather arms culinary enthusiasts with recyclable shopping totes and sends them out to gather recipe-specific, fresh-from-the-field Kauaʻi produce to be transformed into a delicious ʻohana style meal, prepared and enjoyed on site.

Escorted by a local guide, guests will talk story with farmers and sample the bounty of the island: from beets, carrots and daikon to teas, honey and cacao to ripe and fragrant pineapple and coconut, exotic soursop, apple bananas, jackfruit, lychee and mangosteen, and Kauaiʻs abundant harvest of mangos, papayas and passionfruit in the summer season.

Wandering through three different market areas, surrounded by Cook Pines with the strains of live music in the air, Anaina Hou Farmerʻs Market is an ever changing vegetarian’s delight, with a sunny island vibe that inspires culinary creativity.

While introducing the the unique ingredients in three different market areas, guides share Kīlauea’s planation history and Kauaiʻs focus on food security, on one of the most remote islands on earth. Hawaiʻi’s history of connecting people to their environment, through sustainable, healthy eating is celebrated in this experience: a hands-on yield from the field experience distinctly different than what one might have if only dining in restaurants or purchasing packaged foods.

ʻGuided Gather is not a tour,” says Anaina Hou Executive Director Jill Lowry. “It’s a locally grown culinary experience that offers full immersion in Kauai’s food production ecosystem. Our goal is to deliver a memorable connection between food and the land. Teens may be great chefs or aspiring nutritionists. We give them a helping hand and the takeaway is that they learn how to create one delicious meal with handpicked produce – and it’s fun.”

Guided Gather is presented in partnership with Hawaii Tourism Authority. With its focus on nourishment, connection and community, it takes the mystery out of preparing local foods and illustrates why regenerative agriculture is critical not only for Hawai‘i but for the world at large. As importantly, it creates a parent and teen experience of discovery. Parents can choose to do something side-by-side with their teen that gives them a deeper understanding of how small choices can have major positive impacts.

Presented in partnership with the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
