26th Annual Festival of Lights
Wednesday, November 30th, 2022 at 6:00 pm – 11:00 pm
An event every day that begins at 6:00 pm, repeating until January 1st, 2023
Celebrate the holidays on Kauai at Elizabeth Freeman’s annual holiday extravaganza, the award-winning Festival of Lights! Celebrating its 26th year, local designer Elizabeth Freeman presents a transformed holiday celebration of Kauai-style holiday art inspired by her and created with the assistance of local artisans from recycled and reclaimed materials.
In response to public health and safety concerns, this year’s transformed festival will highlight the exterior lighting of the park at the Historic County Building, the main government headquarters of Kauai. From Thanksgiving night to New Year’s Day, millions of lights will illuminate the expansive park, creating a festive public space ideal for social distancing. In addition to the dozens of tall coconut palm trees wrapped in colorful lights, there will also be snowfall and meteor lights projected throughout the park.
Five of the most popular Festival of Lights themed trees will be displayed on the porch of the Historic County Building. Influenced by local culture and sites, the trees feature a variety of upcycled decorations such as aluminum can flowers and water bottle butterflies.
For extra holiday enjoyment, the Kauai Festival of Lights website features a new 360 degree virtual tour of a previous year’s interior display. Visitors can enjoy an up-close look at the top-to-bottom decorated Historic County Building filled with the themed trees, as well as huge wall and floor displays. The website also features a selection of photos from past festivals. Leading the team of art direction is local artist and designer Elizabeth Freeman, whose background spans fine arts and design. Her work has been displayed at the Smithsonian and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. Elizabeth lives on Kauai and teaches and inspires people about her “trash to treasure” artistic vision.
Festivities wouldn’t be complete without Santa and Mrs. Claus, and they will once again share their joy. With personal cameras and phones, visitors may ask an elf helper to take their picture, Fridays Dec. 2-24, 6-8 p.m.
Festival of Lights launches Nov. 24 and continues through Jan. 1, 2023. The park will be illuminated daily, 6-11 p.m. Free and open to the public. https://kauaifestivaloflights.com
